Neighborhood Gallery

6 Starview Drive

Hiller Highlands is a hillside Oakland suburb offering views of the San Francisco Bay. Residents benefit from the neighborhood’s access to dining, retail and outdoor recreation all within a three-mile radius. The neighborhood was initially begun as a project by inventor Stanley Hiller, Sr. who wanted to demonstrate that single channel underground utilities could be effective. In an attempt to gain the interest of P. G.& E. in his invention, in the 1950s Hiller divided his hillside property into 27 lots with underground utilities. P. G. & E. refused to connect utilities to the lots so Hiller was unable to sell them until 1963.

The Hiller Highlands Homes Association was incorporated in 1960 with the first 28 houses. With the addition of more homes, the Hiller Highlands One Association through Hiller Highlands Six Association were added in 1966, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1977, and 1981.

The entire Hiller Highlands neighborhood was rebuilt after the Oakland Firestorm in 1991. While the neighborhood was somewhat reshaped after the fire. the neighborhood is still primarily made up of two and three bedroom townhomes along with several single-family homes that were mostly constructed in the early 1990s.

Stanley Hiller's mansion remains and is now the main building for the private Bentley School lower and middle school campus located just west of the Hiller Highlands development.

Many children are educated at Cabot Elementary School, which has a B-plus Niche rating. Parents must submit applications between December and February for their children to attend. The nearby Claremont Middle School has a B Niche rating and a 15-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Oakland Technical High School has an A Niche rating and a 93% graduation rate. Oakland Technical offers academies specializing in computer science; health; race, policy and law; fashion, art and design; and engineering.

Residents have multiple commuting options to Oakland and San Francisco. Rockridge provides access to the Bay Area Rapid Transit, which includes 50 stations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Residents of Hiller Highlands are within half a mile of several bus stops. If you decide to drive to San Francisco, it’s a 15-mile trip via I-80. The neighborhood is about 3 miles from the University of California, Berkeley.

The locals tend to hop on CA-24 and drive about 2 miles to shop and dine in Rockridge. There you can purchase groceries at Trader Joe’s. Or you can stop by FIT to shop for trendy designer clothing. If you’re in the market for decorations or housewarming gifts, Talisman Antiques carries a selection of southwestern-style rugs, wooden utensils, vases, furniture and paintings. Beer Baron Whiskey Bar & Kitchen has a staff of mixologists and beer connoisseurs who tailor libations to the season. The establishment also specializes in tacos and grilled flatbreads. Millenium is popular for its award-winning vegan cuisine. Many residents also go to Rockridge to catch new film releases or classics at Grand Lake Theatre, which features a Mighty Wurlitzer organ that rises from the floor for quick concerts before some film showings.

The area provides various outdoor recreational opportunities as well. Residents travel a half mile to play golf at Highlands Country Club. The club prioritizes members, but non-members can reserve tee times eight days in advance. Or you can drive about 3 miles to watch the setting sun melt over the San Francisco Bay area from the Grizzly Peak Overlook. If you’re in the mood for hiking, biking or horseback riding, the 208-acre Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve is about 3 miles away.
